Playground Buddy training session 1
Next year, we will have the very responsible job of becoming 'Playground Buddies' - taking care of pupils at break time and lunch time. We had our first session of training today, where we had to work together to describe the characteristics of good and bad playground buddies and identify ways we could improve the playground and equipment. We finished off our session by learning some games we could play with younger children. I think our favourite was 'Buckle up!'
We have been really stretching our brains in y5/6 maths this morning with a 2d shape investigation. We had to use our reasoning skills to make different shapes and there was plenty of trial and error - even Mrs Lee was stumped trying to make a right angled triangle from the given shapes! With plenty of teamwork and discussion we made it in the end - da iawn y5/6!
Investigating sound and vibrations by constructed a 'Spoon Sound Machine'
We are investigating the role of vibrations in making sounds with our 'Spoon Sound' machine. We had to follow a set of instructions to construct the machine correctly and make careful observations to see what happened when we tapped the spoon softy and firmly.
Building our 'Scream Machine'
What a busy morning in Year 5! After weeks collecting recyclable materials from home and finalising our rollercoaster designs, we have started building our creations. They will have moving and light up parts thanks to applying our learning on electrical circuits.
Box Theatre Road Safety Show
A big thank you to Box Theatre for performing 'Getting There' for us this morning - a show about road safety. We really enjoyed it!
Series and Parallel Circuit Challenges
This morning we carried out a series of problem solving challenges. We were given different types of circuits to make - for example, build a circuit with a buzzer you can switch on and off but a bulb that remains on the whole time. We were using the skill of trial and error to find out the correct way to set up our circuit.
Rehearsals for our summer production are underway! Watch this space for our amazing singing, dancing and acting talent.
Insulators and Conductors
We had lots of fun exploring whether different materials were insulators or conductors - once we had experimented with the materials we were given we looked to extend our investigation with materials around the classroom! We sorted the materials into a table and wrote a report about our findings.
Investigating features of persuasive leaflets
This morning we are identifying the language and layout features of persuasive leaflets. We will use this learning to help us design our own leaflets for our theme park.
Making Circuits - May 2019
We have spent time exploring how to set up an electric circuit. Mrs Lee set us the challenge of making brighter bulbs and a fan circuit to keep us cool. Next lesson, we will be investigating which size of fan keeps us the coolest and how many batteries we need for it to be effective.
Safer Routes to School Workshop
A big thank you to Hamish who spent the morning with us today, teaching us about ways we can travel safely. We discussed the pros and cons of travelling different ways, looked at maps to see if we could identify safe routes and planned our own routes on maps.
Trip to see the Turin Shroud
Year 5 and 6 really enjoyed their trip to Newman Hall to see a replica oft he Turin Shroud and share mass with the residents. We learnt lots about the history and importance of the shroud by reading the information boards, viewing artefacts and discussing with the volunteers. We asked lots of sensible questions at the end too.
18/03/2019 - Practicing our play scripts
We chose and rehearsed a play in our groups. We worked so well together on our stage directions and spacing. Mrs Lee watched the final performance and thought she was in the New Theatre!
11/03/2019 - African Mask Paper Mache
Here is the first stage of our African mask project. We researched, sketched and designed a mask with a traditional meaning to make out of paper mache. Watch this space to see our progress!
Here we are enjoying our Size of Wales workshop where we learnt about all the important work the charity does to reduce palm oil use. We were particularly concerned about the effect palm oil has on orangutans because our class novel 'Kensuke's Kingdom' has lots of orangutans in it. We decided to make a logo to advertise palm oil free food.
