Our context for learning this half term is Wonderful Wales. We will be thinking about the Big Question - what's it like to live in Wales?

We will find out about the weather in Wales by recording rainfall and temperature using our maths skills.

Our literacy skills will be developed by a special visitor to our classroom - a dragon egg! We will learn to ask questions and use a question mark and write our own dragon story.

Year 1 Autumn 1 Overview

Year 1 Autumn 2 Overview

The four purposes of the new curriculum for Wales inform our teaching. Our learning experiences enable our pupils to be:

  • ambitious, capable learners who undertake research and evaluate critically what they find and are ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors who give of their energy and skills so that other people will benefit and are ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens who show their commitment to the sustainability of the planet and are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals who have the skills and knowledge to manage everyday life as independently as they can and are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

Autumn Term

In the Autumn Term, our contexts for learning will be Once Upon a Time.... and Celebrate!

Once Upon a Time.....

In this context we explore the world of traditional tales and the characters that we meet. We visit the woods, the enchanted castle and Grandma's cottage as we apply our literacy and numeracy skills.

In the second half term we travel around the world looking at different celebrations and special days.

Throughout the year, the children will develop the following skills:

Place Value

Addition and Subtraction

Number Bonds

Data handling

Pattern and Shape

We understand the importance of literacy skills and their use within the wider world.  As part of your child's literacy lessons, they will be learning to spell words relating to specific patterns each week in class.  We have listened to your feedback and have made available lists of words that you can study with your child at home.  The lists compiled are words that your child will come across as part of their reading in school and are age appropriate. These can be found under 'Resources and Useful Links'.

PE will take place every Thursday . Please bring in shorts/leggings/tracksuit and a t-shirt. The children will also need trainers and in the colder months, a fleece or sweatshirt. Earrings will need to be removed or covered with tape before the children come to school.

During this term children in Year 1 will explore the following during their PE lessons;

Different types of movement

Working with a partner and in a group

Other Useful Information

Please ensure that your child's jumper, coat and water bottle are labelled clearly with their name.
