Year 1

Welcome to Year 1!

All teachers will post information about their class to the 'Latest News'. Updates will also be sent via 'The School App'. Instructions on how to download our app, can be found under the 'Parents' tab.

Photos are displayed for each class in the 'Gallery'. These can be found under the 'Gallery' tab. Photos will be accompanied with a written description of what the children have been doing in class that week.

If you need to contact the school and your query is concerning your child’s work please contact your child’s class teacher by using j2message for Foundation Phase teachers.

If you need to speak to the Senior Management Team concerning any other matter, please email support@stjosephsprm.cardiff.sch.uk and your email will be responded to as soon as possible. Do not use the usual school email as this is not always manned if the office is closed

Thank you for your continued support during these difficult times.

The four purposes of the new curriculum for Wales inform our teaching. Our learning experiences enable our pupils to be:

  • ambitious, capable learners who undertake research and evaluate critically what they find and are ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors who give of their energy and skills so that other people will benefit and are ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens who show their commitment to the sustainability of the planet and are ready to be citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals who have the skills and knowledge to manage everyday life as independently as they can and are ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

Maths

Throughout the year, the children will develop the following skills:

Counting

Place Value

Addition and Subtraction

Number Bonds

Time

Measurement

Data handling

Money

Pattern and Shape

Literacy

We understand the importance of literacy skills and their use within the wider world.  As part of your child's literacy lessons, they will be learning to spell words relating to specific patterns each week in class.  We have listened to your feedback and have made available lists of words that you can study with your child at home.  The lists compiled are words that your child will come across as part of their reading in school and are age appropriate. These can be found under 'Resources and Useful Links'.

PE

PE will take place every Tuesday . Please bring in shorts/leggings/tracksuit and a t-shirt. The children will also need trainers and in the colder months, a fleece or sweatshirt. Earrings will need to be removed or covered with tape before the children come to school.

During this term children in Year 1 will explore the following during their PE lessons;

Different types of movement

Dance

Gymnastics

Working with a partner and in a group
