This term we will be continuing to raise awareness of children's rights around the school. We are creating a presentation to inform children about the role of the 'Children's Commissioner for Wales.' We have also decided on what half term competitions we are going to set for FP and KS2 and these will be given out to children next week ready for half term! As Super Ambassadors for children's rights, we are also working on the next 'Special Mission' for the Children's Commissioner which is to create a reflective piece on where we are in out Rights Respecting Journey. We'll keep you updated!
26.11.21 Take a look at some of the work we did on World Children's Day! As part of our Unicef Outright project, some classes created a mind map to show their understanding of what is meant by being a ‘global citizen’. They discussed what their role in this is. Years 5 and 5 then researched a local decision-maker or media outlet in Cardiff or Wales. The children discussed how they could reach out to encourage the decision- makers to raise awareness of the important of children's mental health in their work.
Last week was 'World Children's Day.' This year, we are taking part in the UNICEF Outright Project which encourages children to speak out about issues which concern them. The focus of the project at the moment is on mental health, what it is and what we can do to support those struggling with mental health at home and around the world.
KS2 were introduced to the project through being part of an online Unicef live event on World Children's Day.
Right of the Month: Article 14 (freedom of thought, belief and religion)
Year 1 discussed as a class why they thought religious buildings were important and what happened in these buildings. The pupils then had to work together and think creatively to build a religious building using our building blocks. The children created some amazing buildings.

This year, Year 1 have been chosen to be the Rights Respecting Class which means we have been learning all about our rights. This month we will be focusing on Article 19: 'I have the right to be safe'. To keep us all safe this Bonfire Night Year 1 have created a Bonfire Night safety video filled with lots of tips and instructions to keep us all safe.
How can parents support what children are learning about rights at school?
Take the time to ask your child what he/she has learned recently regarding children’s rights.
Discuss the ideas learned in class, and try to think of examples from your own experiences, or from the media, of rights being respected or denied.
Discuss how your child or your family can promote respect for rights, or help those whose rights have been violated.
Ask your child’s opinion on children’s rights.
Achieving Some typical ways of using Rights Respecting language at home:
You have the right to play but you must respect the family’s right to a tidy house and must tidy up your toys afterward.
You have the right to watch the TV but your right to be fed is more important right now and you need to turn the TV off.
You have the right to an opinion and I will listen but you need to respect my right to express an opinion as well.
You have the right to be healthy and my job is to make you healthy by giving you healthy foods.
You have the right to a clean world to live in and so does everyone else. Therefore you need to respect that right and put your rubbish in the bin.

Congratulations to the Rights Respecting team of children at St Josephs who have gained the school our Silver Rights Award! This award proves that our school community is aware of and acting upon the Convention of the Rights of the Child.
