St Joseph's R.C. Primary School

Welcome from our Headteacher, Mrs Alex Riordan

We are committed to developing a valued partnership between home and school, and the wider community, so that together we can provide a rich and stimulating education. We have a dedicated and involved Governing Body that works hard and effectively with school. We strive constantly to improve and develop every aspect of the school.

Central to our commitment is the development of children who are well prepared for the future. At St Joseph’s, concentrate on the development and growth of the whole child and our curriculum is focused on encouraging and supporting our children to be:

  • ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
  • enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
  • ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world
  • healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.

We hope the information on the website and the videos below give you an insight into our school and what you can expect in becoming part of our St Joseph’s family. If you would like to find out more about our school, please do not hesitate to contact us to arrange a visit.

Welcome from our children

Welcome from the Chair of Governors

Dear Parents,

The Governors welcome both your child and you to the school and hope your stay will be happy and fulfilling. We are a very committed and active governing body.  All staff and governors work together at St Joseph’s with a common aim of providing a Christ centred safe and vibrant learning environment in which all children can reach their full potential and have an enjoyable experience in this wonderful school.  As parents and carers, you are very much part of the whole school community and your opinions and comments are very valuable to us,

Cofion cynnes,

Matthew O'Brien

Chair of Governors

Our Governors

The Governors at St Joseph’s Primary play an important role and have considerable responsibility in setting the strategic direction of the school along with the Head Teacher and senior leadership team.  Governors do not manage schools, this is the role of the head teacher and senior leadership team, but we do oversee the development of the school, the main aim of which is always to provide a high standard of education for all pupils of all abilities.  In essence as the accountable body for the school, the governing body has three main roles:

  • provide a strategic view of where the school is heading. This is done by reviewing and agreeing policies, targets and priorities and monitoring and reviewing aims and objectives.
  • act as a critical friend to the school. The governing body works with the head teacher to create a clear understanding of the challenges faced in managing the school. The governing body should feel able to question and challenge and this is achieved through trust and mutual respect. The governing body uses its collective skills to benefit the children, by gathering views and asking questions to determine what is best for the school.

Our Governors have a variety of skills and backgrounds that provide the school with a wide range of expertise and support. What unifies us is our strong commitment to the schools Catholic vision and ethos and supporting the school Mission Statement of “ We grow together in God’s love as we pray, learn and play”.  We are a mixture of parent governors, school staff, co-opted governors and local council representatives.

Our Parent Governors have children in our school, are elected by parents of the school and serve, as do other Governors, for four years.  We meet every half-term to discuss the work of the school and look at where we are going and how we can make improvements.

The governors visit the school throughout the year and most have a link to specific subjects and their teachers or areas of the school such as Special Educational Needs, Finance, ICT and Safeguarding.  This is an important opportunity to see the school in action and governors enjoy the chance to meet staff and children and learn about what makes our school special.

If you are interested in becoming a Governor, the Head teacher will be pleased to provide further details.

Thank you for your support,
St Joseph’s Governing Body
