In order to enhance the Catholic ethos of our school and highlight the value of caring for others, we have decided to implement the ‘Peer Mediator/Supporter’ scheme in the school with our Year 5 children.
Peer Mediators are pupils who befriend and support other pupils who may have worries or concerns. Two members of staff, Mrs Riordan and Mrs Zabaneh, will help and support children in carrying out this task.
The ethos of St Joseph’s, as in any Catholic school, is central to learning and we feel this initiative will enhance our ethos. We see this project as a valuable way of furthering the pastoral care in the school and developing the social and moral development of the children in our care and promoting a community of caring for others.
The Peer Mediator Scheme also prepares our Y5 pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. The scheme also aims to give children autonomy and self confidence through developing language and problem solving skills which in turn will impact on their learning.
The qualities required for the role include – being a good listener and having a mature and sensible approach to school life. The role will be developed over the next few months.
Please see the PowerPoint below information about the scheme.
