In preparation for International week, the children have been asked to produce a presentation about a country of their choice. The format of the presentation is their choice, but ideas could include a poster, a mini-book, a power-point presentation.

If your child produces a powerpoint these can be emailed to the school, but please ensure the subject is FAO Mrs Wheeler Class 6 Homework.

Homework for Half-term

We are preparing for St David's Day. As part of their homework, children are to complete their entries for this year's Eisteddfod. Children are to compose a poem on the theme "This Land of Wales". The winning poet will be crowned as our Bard for 2015. Children should assume a nom de plume so that the judges do not know the actual identity of each poet.

Cooking competition - children are asked to create a traditional Welsh dish. Please ensure that the item is in a container clearly marked with your child's name and class.

Model Making - Years Three and Four are to make a model of a dragon, daffodil or leek.

Story Competition - Children are asked to write in their own words a story they have heard or read that relates to Wales

Mr Jones does not separate his rubbish into recycling and landfill. He puts everything into a black bag. He says it takes too much time to sort his rubbish out and what difference does it make anyway?

How would you convince Mr Jones that he should be recycling? What would you say to him?

Our topic for this half term is "What a load of rubbish!". The homework for this week is to analyse the things we throw away and the things we recycle. Over the next week I would like the children to investigate what their household recycles and what is thrown away to landfill. They can choose how to present their work. We will be using the information gained in our lessons.

Design a leaflet to advertise Llancaiach Fawr.

Remember, your information must attract visitors. You may want to include:

• what you can do at the Manor house - take a tour with the servants, dance to Stuart music and musical instruments, dress up in clothes from 1645, make sweetmeats, learn how to cure illnesses.
• How to get there
• the cost
• Why you should visit it - what is so good about it?
• Opening times

Remember - the servants remain in character and speak in old English. They transport you back to the year 1645.

Imagine that you live in the city in 1665 during the time of the plague. You are to write a letter to your family (who live in the country). You are to tell them all about the plague. Include information about:

• what happens to people when they catch the plague
• how you think you catch the plague
• how people know that there is plague in the house
• what the plague doctor is and what he looks like
• remedies for the plague - you could include information about plague bags
• how the dead bodies are removed from the houses.

You might also like to "set the scene" - include information about the weather (remember it was hot that year), how many people have already died, what the Lord Mayor has done to try and stop the plague spreading.

We have been investigating symmetrical patterns. This week I would like the children to use squared paper and colours to create a pattern with at least 2 lines of symmetry. Below is an example:

All the children in Class 6 have now been given their bug club user names and passwords. They are able to access and read books on line. Once they have completed a book a new one will be allocated.

Mrs Wheeler's maths group (Years 3 and 4) will have on-line maths activities to complete for their homework. The children have been given the website address (activelearnprimary.co.uk), their usernames, passwords and the school code (q6wh). 

Each week an activity linked to their classwork will be allocated. Mrs Wheeler is able view who has completed each activity and how well they did. Some of the children in the group have not yet attempted any of their homework activities. If there is a problem with access to computers or the internet please speak to Mrs Wheeler.

Homework will usually be given on a Thursday and should be returned to school the following Tuesday.

Your child is expected to read regularly at home. Please help them by listening to them, discussing characters and storylines and asking questions to make them think.
