Additional Support for the Homework

To work out 1/10, you need to divide the number by 10. So 1/10 of 240 is 24.

240 / 10 = 24

To work out 4 ½ x 10, you need to convert the number to a decimal.  1/2 as a decimal is 0.5 Therefore, the answer is 4 + 0.5 = 4.5

Once you have worked out 4.5, you multiply the number by 10. The decimal point does not move, but all the number move 1 place to the left when multiplying by 10 (2 when multiplying by 100).

Therefore, 4.5 x 10 = 45.

The next question involves balancing the equation. This means getting the same answer on both sides.

2 + 2 = ____ + 1

The answer is not 4, because the question wants you to balance the equation. Don't forget about the + 1.

The answer is 3. This is because 2 + 2 = 4 and 3 + 1 = 4.

If the question was 2 + 2 = ______ and there was no +1, then the answer would be 4.  Remember to read all questions very carefully.

To work out 3/4 of a number we need to work out 1/2 and 1/4.

If we needed to work out 3/4 of 40, then we would need to work out 1/2 and 1/4.

We can work out 1/4 by halving a number and halving it again.

1/2 of 40 is 20

1/2 of 20 = 10

Therefore, 1/4 of 40 = 10

To find 3/4, we add the answer for 1/2 and 1/4 together.

Therefore, 3/4 of 40 = 20 (1/2) + 10 (1/4).

3/4 of 40 = 20 + 10

3/4 of 40 = 30.

You can also work out 3/4 of 40 by dividing by the bottom and multiplying by the top.

40 / 4 = 10

10 x 3 = 30

3/4 of 40 = 30

Percentages, Decimals and Fractions

1/10 = 0.1 (0.10) = 10%

1/4 = 0.25 = 25%

1/2 = 0.5 (0.50) = 50%

3/4 = 0.75 = 75%

Using the Inverse Operation

_______  /   10 =  14

If you have a question like this, you use the inverse operation to solve it.

At the moment, the question is something divided by 10 = 14.

Therefore, we need to multiply to find the answer.

We take the answer 14 and multiply is by 10.

14 x 10 = 140

Therefore, 140 / 10 = 14

140 is the answer because 140 divided by 10 = 14.

Reasoning Revision Questions

Tracey the spider climbs to the top of the pipe after 4 attempts. The pipe is 28cm in length. She climbs ¼ of the way on the first attempt. She climbs ½ way on the second attempt. She climbs ¾ of the way on the third attempt.

  1. How long was Tracey’s journey to the top of the pipe?

There are two characters. Every quarter of an hour the first character shouts twice. Every 20 minutes the second character barks.

  1. In one hour, how many shouts are there?
  2. In one hour, how many barks are there?
  3. In ten hours, how many more shouts than barks are there?

You can only access Microsoft Teams by first logging in to your Hwb account. Do not attempt to download the app on the iPad, laptop or your tablet. This will not work. You must use Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome to access Hwb and then click Teams.

If you do not have a laptop, PC or Chromebook, please write down your examples on paper ready for Tuesday 28th November 2017.

You will not be able to access this homework using an iPad or tablet.

Please make sure you are using Hwb sensibly. What you do on Hwb is recorded. This is to keep you safe.

Remember to check your work before pressing enter. Your comment cannot be deleted or edited once you have responded.

All discussions must be about the work and never about events taking place outside of school.

Science Project Update (10/11/2017)

Please proofread and update the Sway you made on either the lungs, heart or brain. Check for spelling mistakes and make additional improvements. Make sure the images you have included are clear and easy to see. Your Sway will be viewed in class on Monday.
