Welcome! We begin our preparation for the children of our Parish to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. Baptised children of school year 3 or above are invited. If your child has additional needs, or is secondary school age, please discuss how we can support your child.

A Meeting for Parents/ Carers will be held on Wednesday 11th September at 7:30pm in the Meeting room at St Joseph’s CHURCH.

You will need to bring:                   1. Completed Enrolment form.

                                             2. Your child’s Baptism certificate or copy. This is essential.

                              3. £8 to cover the cost of your child’s book.

Weekly meetings for the children start on Wednesday 25th September between 5:30-6:45pm at St Joseph’s CHURCH.

Please bring your child in, so they are safely registered. The outside door is locked during sessions.

These run at the same time as the children’s sessions and will be held in the Meeting room (children go into the Church on those dates). During the Reconciliation preparation, meetings will be 16th Oct & 29th Nov, during Communion Preparation to be confirmed, (likely 5th Feb and 22nd April 2020).

FAQS FOR PREPARATION FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION

  1. Can my child join the programme for preparation?

They must be baptised, with a valid baptism, recognised by the Catholic Church. School year 3 or above. If your child is older than primary age, please discuss with Fr Justus, eg. Confirmation course with additional support, or RCIA may be more appropriate.

  1. What does the preparation involve for my child?

Weekly sessions in term time, hour and a quarter each week.

  • Eleven sessions during the autumn term, preparing for Reconciliation.
  • Eleven sessions during Spring and Summer terms, preparing for First Communion, plus preparation/ practice sessions for First Communion Mass.

The sessions are based around Bible readings & discussion. Over the weeks, we aim to help the children understand God's love for us, how Jesus offers us salvation and the giving of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The mystery of the Eucharist, passed on by Jesus, is explored. We talk about how that relates to the Mass today. We usually start in the meeting room, process into church, listen to the reading, with display of illustrations and interactive discussion. We spend some time praying/ singing. We go back into the meeting room for activities in their books, relevant crafts etc.

  1. What is expected of parents?
  • Please bring your child to the sessions regularly and on time.
  • If they bring home a prayer/ something they've made, talk about it, look at their books.
  • Let us know if you think your child needs more help.
  • Parents need to come to two meetings during Reconciliation preparation, and two meetings during First Communion preparation. These run at the same time as the children's sessions.
  1. Why can't classes be held in school/ RE lessons?

It is Parish based to provide for all children, including those who attend other schools. It's not just about learning facts or going to class. It aims to be a journey in faith and relationship with God.

  1. Do we really have to come to church every week?

If you've not been in the habit of regular mass, please know that you are welcome. This is your parish. Come along, get involved. In the Mass we are nourished by God’s Word in the Readings and by the Eucharist. The Eucharist is Jesus, truly present, given for us. There is usually provision for Children's Liturgy during the 9:15am Sunday Mass. You've brought your child to receive the Sacraments. It ought to be reflected that this is important to you also.

  1. How will I know what's going on?

Dates are given at the start. Email/ letters home updates through the programme.

  1. What if my child is unwell/ can't get to a session?

Let us know: Theresa Howe theresa.howe@btinternet.com 07972203750, or Shehla Kandara 07910755958.
