Mathematics Numeracy Coverage Autumn Term 2024.
As a job share, Miss Westgarth and Mrs Houston have designated roles in the delivery of the mathematics curriculum. Mrs Houston is responsible for numeracy and problem-solving within that context. At the beginning of the autumn term, the children went back to number bonds to 20 and the majority can now calculate three-digit addition and number and have extended this to problem-solving where they apply their learning. Most pupils know their multiplication tables to six and including ten. They have applied this learning in problem-solving tasks at the beginning of the spring term to make calculations about the amount of water that they use. Children can identify the value of individual numbers within a five-digit number, and record numbers in words and digits. The children understand square numbers up to six and including ten. They can identify even and odd numbers. This will be extended to factors in the spring term. Children understand the process of multiplication and are beginning to apply this skill in problem-solving activities. Retrieval of multiplication facts is used daily in mental maths sessions and is applied in a problem-solving context. Children can use the more than and less than sign and equals symbol to complete mathematical statements. Pupils are able to sequence numbers according to size up to four digits and round numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. Children have applied their multiplication skills to using formulas to calculate the area of shapes, including half squares. Pupils use their numeracy skills to calculate the perimeters of regular and irregular shapes. I have added samples of the type of work undertaken and how this is used in the daily maths sessions to consolidate learning. At the start of the spring term, pupils in Dosbarth Gwynno will focus on fractions. Evidence of work is available on the ‘My Week’ web page for parents to look at.
