St Joseph's R.C. Primary School

Week beginning 20/10/25

Happy final week of the first half term!
This half term has been amazing. The children have settled in so well to school life, and we have created a beautiful class community. It has been so lovely watching the children come out of their shells, make new friends, and learn new things.

In R.E. this week, we re-enacted a baptism. The children took on the roles of parents, grandparents, and the priest. We set up an altar at the front of the classroom and prepared all of our baptism symbols ready for our re-enactment. The children really enjoyed taking part and showed great understanding of this important Christian celebration. They also loved playing in this area after our lesson, practising the baptism independently with their peers. We will revisit this after half term to refresh and build on their knowledge.

In Phonics, our focus sounds were e, u, and r. The children practised blending simple words through enhanced provision activities and have been working hard on their letter formation.

For Literacy and Topic, we continued reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar and have become even more familiar with the story. For our writing task, the children drew the foods they would eat if they were the very hungry caterpillar and explained their choices. They also demonstrated excellent prior knowledge, remembering that caterpillars turn into butterflies! 🦋

In Maths, we continued exploring subitising. We played fun games using large dice, counted and matched the dots, and sang some subitising songs together. The children are becoming much more confident at recognising numbers without counting.

Our Emotional Regulation Station has been really useful, with the children now becoming more confident using it to express how they are feeling. We also introduced a Self-Registration Station, where the children place their picture in a ten frame each morning to show they are in school and recognise which children are absent.

In Welsh, we learned how to ask and answer the question “Sut wyt ti?” (How are you?). Each morning, our Helpwr Heddiw asks the class both “Sut mae’r tywydd heddiw?” (What’s the weather like today?) and “Sut wyt ti?”

On Miss Wood’s Wood Wednesday, the children went on a scavenger hunt! They each had their own clipboard with a tick sheet and had to explore the woods to find the wooden blocks with pictures on them. These included bugs, leaves, and flowers. It was wonderful to watch the children working independently and finding friends to work with.

The children also had their first school pictures taken!

Happy Half Term, Dosbarth Dewi Sant! 🌟
You have all worked so hard and should be very proud of yourselves!
