Maths and Literacy in Dosbarth Gwynno Sant - Mrs Houston, numeracy.

Maths and Literacy in Dosbarth Gwynno Sant

The children have continued with their writing journey on “When Jessie came across the Sea.” As part of the work this week, the children have undertaken comprehension tasks. In addition, they have produced a piece of creative writing where they have been required to imagine how they would feel and why they would wish to emigrate and to reflect on whether the streets are ‘ paved in gold' in America. The children have worked very hard on this. Most children have learnt their 2, 3-, 4-, 5- and 10-times table. Children must have an excellent recall of multiplication facts to ten if they are to progress confidently in their numeracy skills. The process of addition is being taught, and most children are making good progress with this process. Some children have begun applying this learning to problem-solving, some using tens and units and some hundreds of tens and units. The topic of place value is coming to an end and the most able can identify the values of numbers up to a million, some to hundreds of thousands and the majority to hundreds. Understanding of square numbers, multiples, products up to the five times table and including 10 is achieved by most. The children have been issued with homework that needs to be returned on Monday of next week and reading records are respectfully asked to be completed. A huge thank you to Arthurs and Esther’s mums for coming in to hear the children read. Any volunteers, including grandparents, are most welcome to come in and support hearing children read. Your children will have completed guided group reading, spelling and handwriting tasks this week. Some children had two sets of common usage words to learn, and others also had to complete more challenging common usage words. The children know their scores. Differentiated homework for mathematics has been issued to parents, some including reasoning and problem-solving. Children can record their answers on their sheet, and these will be placed in mathematics books. Please return homework bags on Monday.

Thank you,

Mrs Houston
