Guide to answering questions
To work out 1/10, you need to divide the number by 10. So 1/10 of 240 is 24.
240 / 10 = 24
To work out 4 ½ x 10, you need to convert the number to a decimal. 1/2 as a decimal is 0.5 Therefore, the answer is 4 + 0.5 = 4.5
Once you have worked out 4.5, you multiply the number by 10. The decimal point does not move, but all the number move 1 place to the left when multiplying by 10 (2 when multiplying by 100).
Therefore, 4.5 x 10 = 45.
The next question involves balancing the equation. This means getting the same answer on both sides.
2 + 2 = ____ + 1
The answer is not 4, because the question wants you to balance the equation. Don't forget about the + 1.
The answer is 3. This is because 2 + 2 = 4 and 3 + 1 = 4.
If the question was 2 + 2 = ______ and there was no +1, then the answer would be 4. Remember to read all questions very carefully.
To work out 3/4 of a number we need to work out 1/2 and 1/4.
If we needed to work out 3/4 of 40, then we would need to work out 1/2 and 1/4.
We can work out 1/4 by halving a number and halving it again.
1/2 of 40 is 20
1/2 of 20 = 10
Therefore, 1/4 of 40 = 10
To find 3/4, we add the answer for 1/2 and 1/4 together.
Therefore, 3/4 of 40 = 20 (1/2) + 10 (1/4).
3/4 of 40 = 20 + 10
3/4 of 40 = 30.
You can also work out 3/4 of 40 by dividing by the bottom and multiplying by the top.
40 / 4 = 10
10 x 3 = 30
3/4 of 40 = 30
Percentages, Decimals and Fractions
1/10 = 0.1 (0.10) = 10%
1/4 = 0.25 = 25%
1/2 = 0.5 (0.50) = 50%
3/4 = 0.75 = 75%
Using the Inverse Operation
_______ / 10 = 14
If you have a question like this, you use the inverse operation to solve it.
At the moment, the question is something divided by 10 = 14.
Therefore, we need to multiply to find the answer.
We take the answer 14 and multiply is by 10.
14 x 10 = 140
Therefore, 140 / 10 = 14
140 is the answer because 140 divided by 10 = 14.
