Following the Cardiff ICT Advisory Team's ICT Skills Ladder, each year comprises six major strands of learning. Typically, we cover one strand per half term. The main strands are:

  • Word Processing

  • Graphics

  • Multimedia

  • Modelling

  • Handling Information

  • Internet and Email

In addition to these strands, we also introduce children to game developing, simple programming and animation.

Information and Communication Technology ('ICT') is taught each week. We teach using the 'ICT Skills Ladder' developed by the Cardiff ICT Advisory Team. This ensures that skills coverage within and across year groups is comprehensive, and progression is guaranteed.

Teaching pupils how to stay safe

Undoubtedly, the most important thing which we teach the children is how to use ICT sensibly and responsibly, and how to stay safe at all times. This is a thread which runs throughout this subject. However, when we move on to the Internet and Email within certain year groups, we focus explicitly on how remain safe while using the Internet, mobile phones, social media and email. As part of this topic, we show the children an excellent website called ‘Thinkuknow’. This is created and run by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre, which is affiliated to the Serious Organised Crime Agency. We strongly recommend that you do visit this site. The address is: (or google ‘thinkuknow’).  Click here to hyperlink to this website.

Word Processing

We teach pupils general keyboard skills, and develop their ability to type using both hands. This ensures that the children have a strong platform on which to build their typing speed and accuracy. We introduce children to different word processing programs, moving onto Microsoft Word within Year 3. Children learn about layout, formatting and embedding graphics and tables.

Within this strand pupils learn about spreadsheets. By the time they leave us in Year 6, they will have learnt how to create spreadsheets, how to format, how to generate suitable graphs and charts - complete with chart title and axes labels, and how to generate and extend formulae.

Internet and Email

Pupils regularly use the internet throughout different curriculum subjects for researching text and images. In their ICT lessons, pupils will be taught how to search safely, sensibly and effectively using a range of query terms. They are also introduced to emailing within the safety of the school's emailing system.

Pupils begin with graphics at a early stage, and use these to develop vital mouse control through exploring the program and using the mouse to draw. As they move through the years, the pupils are introduced to several different graphics programs, including those which enable them to edit digital photos (which they themselves take and upload), and add graphical elements.

Game Developing and programming

Within Years 3 and 6, pupils are introduced to simple game developing and computer programming, including 'Scratch', created by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (downloadable for free from the MIT website:

This covers a considerable range of skills, from combining sound, text and graphics in Year 1, to the creating of impressive animated slideshows within Key Stage 2, complete with hyperlinks to other work and relevant websites.

Handling Information

This strand covers general data handling and databases. Children learn how to interrogate databases effectively and efficiently. They will also create their own databases, complete with text and images.

Within Years 4 and 6, pupils are given the opportunity to apply their growing knowledge of graphics and digital photography to animation. They are introduced to different animation programs, and given the equipment and the opportunities to create their own animations to share with others.
